Getting A Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189

The Australian Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 is a skilled visa issued by the Australian government to skilled workers who may not have been able to secure sponsorship from an employer or state or territory or family member. Such visa holder is also free to live and work anywhere in Australia. Certain family members, who are qualified, can be added to the main application.

The applicant is expected to have scored the minimum required 60 points in the Points Test to be considered for this visa.

Applying for the Skilled Independent visa Subclass 189

An Expression of Interest is expected to be submitted before a valid visa application can be submitted. The Expression of Interest should be submitted via SkillSelect and can be done from anywhere in the world.

In order to apply for this visa, applicants must:

  • Be given an Invitation to Apply
  • Be younger than 50 years at the time of application
  • Have selected an occupation from the Australian Skilled Occupation List that matches your skills and qualifications
  • Have had your skills assessed by the relevant authority that assesses skills in your occupation or skill area
  • Have a proof of proficiency in English language
  • Have scored at least 60 points in the Points Test
  • Have satisfied all the health and character requirements

Australian Skilled Visa Process

The Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 goes through a 3-stage process which are

Stage 1:  Completion of Skills assessment. This enables the DIBP to ascertain that you are qualified and that you have the required skill to function in your chosen area of occupation.

Stage 2: Once the applicant is able to secure a positive skills assessment, he or she can proceed to submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.

Stage 3: Those who are successful will be given an Invitation to Apply which gives them the chance to submit their final application which can be approved or disapproved by the DIBP.

Priority processing applies to this type of visa. This means that DIBP has the sole right to determine the order in which applications are considered, regardless of the time when the application was lodged.

All successful applicants are issues a 5 year multiple entry visa which allows them to live and work in Australia. As long as you can live in Australia for 2 years out of the 5 years, your visa will be renewed at expiry. If you stay in Australia for 4 out of the 5 years, you are eligible for citizenship.
